Earn As in those premed prerequisites

Your science coursework and GPA are crucial to your med school application and your career as a physician. Focus your attention on doing as well as possible in these courses.
Check out our premed services
2

Develop a strong premed resume, with a balance of clinical and research experiences

Med schools will be looking to make sure that you are able to handle science as well as people, lab work as well as patient care. Your resume should display awareness and experience of both of medicine’s key pillars.

7

Update letters and letters of intent

The medical school admissions process is long and sometimes requires additional documentation months after your initial AMCAS submission.  If you are still waiting for interviews or replies from programs well into the winter after your submission, a letter directed to a specific program might be the right next step for you.

Testimonials

“Carla helped me organize my thoughts and show my unique journey towards becoming a physician-scientist. Carla helped me organize my writing in a way that made the most sense to the reader and was consistent with the rest of my application. Carla was very thorough and efficient, and she gave advice that I was able to apply to all aspects of my application. I would not have been so successful at telling my story without Carla's help.”

“My time with the coaches and with this company exceeded my expectations 100%. My coaches were both very knowledgeable and very helpful. They consistently checked in on me and got edits back very quickly. Dhruv was very available and provided resources for me to use that I had never heard of. I felt like he actually cared about me and my success rather than just getting paid. This company really cared about me and my application. I got my money’s worth.”

“I couldn't recommend Cambridge Coaching more. I had a windy path to medical school: I took some time off and had a low MCAT and GPA. However, with Erica's help I got into multiple programs! She never made me feel embarrassed about my scores. Rather, she made me feel confident in the other aspects of my application.”

“Ellen has been an amazing coach and mentor throughout the MD application process. She has made me feel very comfortable sharing my story. Ellen has helped me craft essays that I feel truly represent me and my desire to pursue medicine. As a first generation college student, Ellen has shared so much with me about applying to medical school and what to expect later on. From primaries to secondaries to interviews, Ellen has helped me every step of the way. I could not have done this without her help. ”

“Josie really got to know me as an applicant. She helped me carefully sculpt my essays and my interview responses to present myself as the best applicant I could be.”

“Ellen was instrumental in my receiving several interviews and acceptances to medical school. Through her coaching, she taught me skills that took my personal statement and secondary applications from boring to essays that I am genuinely proud of. Her compassion, kindness, intelligence, and expertise made this stressful, discouraging process much easier.”

“Erica is an absolute life saver! I came to her in panic mode, just days before I needed to submit my primary application. Erica helped me craft a beautiful personal statement story, brainstorm ideas for secondaries, and prepare for interviews. The application cycle became a little less daunting knowing I had Erica in my corner to address any concerns and answer all my questions. I was fortunate to get into my top choice medical program, and I credit a large part of my success to her help.”

Medical School ApplicantMatriculated at University of Miami Leonard M. Miller School of Medicine

“Erica is truly the best! She was able to take my life experiences and help me craft the perfect personal statement. She also fine tuned my medical school list based on my MCAT score, GPA, and specific school statistics, allowing me to apply in a thorough and organized manner (saving me money and time). Lastly, Erica properly prepared me for perhaps the scariest part of the medical school process: interviews. She did an amazing job prepping me for whatever interview might come in my way. She genuinely wants her clients to succeed. ”

FAQs

  • What coursework must be completed before attending medical school?

Prerequisites include at least four full years, with labs, in the basic sciences: biology, general chemistry, organic chemistry, and physics.  For specific details on course requirements, you should check the AAMC website.
  • Do I have to be pre-med in order to apply to medical school?

No; as long as you have completed the required science coursework, either in undergrad or through a postbacc program, you are eligible to apply to medical school.
  • Is it harder to apply to med school if I’ve been out of school for a while?

You are not at a disadvantage here: a lot of med school applicants take more than a year “off” after college. That said, it is very important to be able to submit strong MCAT scores taken within four years of matriculation; as such, it is important that you make plans to stay sharp academically.
  • What MCAT score do I need to achieve in order to get into medical school?

The answer to that question depends on a variety of factors, including your target programs and the strength of the other components of your application.  The best way to determine a target score on the MCAT is to purchase access to the MSAR (Medical School Admissions Requirements), which will give you the stats affiliated with every American medical school, including MCAT medians.  You can purchase the MSAR on the AAMC website.

  • What should my GPA be in order to get into medical school? How about my science GPA?

This answer is also variable based on your target programs and the strength of other areas of your application. Much like with the MCAT, the best way to determine whether your GPA aligns with a particular medical school's past admission statistics is to purchase access to the MSAR (Medical School Admissions Requirements), which will give you the medians for both cumulative GPA and science GPA. Should you find that your GPA is below the median of your target programs, consider redistributing your school list. If your GPA is significantly below the medians or the bottom 10th percentile of most American medical schools, it will be important for you to take stock and consider your options (including enrolling in a post-bacc or Masters program, retaking certain pre-med courses, or considering alternate career paths to MD and DO, such as PA school or nursing).

  • When is the deadline to apply to medical school?

This is a bit of a trick question.  Though the deadlines listed on individual school sites list fall deadlines, it is important you apply in the month of June, when the AMCAS -- or the application portal for medical school -- first opens.  This is because medical school admissions is a rolling admissions process, and the earlier you apply in the cycle, the more competitive you are in the eyes of admissions committees.  For frame of reference, we typically regard anyone applying after June as late, and encourage them to defer a cycle based solely on the timing of their application.
  • I've decided to take a few gap years between my undergrad and medical school. How should I use the time to make myself a more competitive applicant?

Unbeknownst to many, taking a few years off from school can work in your favor.  You can use the time to participate in diverse and meaningful experiences.  You should seek out clinical, research, and volunteer experiences that allow you to make strong relationships, which will hopefully yield strong letters of recommendation.  If at all possible, securing positions of leadership will strengthen your application all the more.  Finally, you should think critically about what draws you to medicine, and then engage with experiences that help you test that claim.  It's ok if there are some experiences that you don't like -- that's the point!  Through hours worked or volunteered, you will able to refine your understanding of why it is you want to be a doctor, which will shine through in your written materials and interviews when it comes time to apply.

  • I am an international applicant. How is my application process different?

Although some American medical schools do admit a small number of international applicants each year, it is admittedly statistically less common. Though many of the application components are the same for international applicants, the requirements are slightly different (including demonstrating proficiency in the English language). Schools also have varying policies on accepting international applicants, so it’s important to confirm each school’s policy and admissions requirements before you apply. You can do this by checking on an individual school's website or by purchasing access to the MSAR.
