Alex attended Colby College, where he studied Chinese, graduating with distinction in the major. He then spent five years studying and working in China, first as an English-Chinese interpreter for the president of a major multinational corporation, and then for the cast and crew of a 52-episode television series. Then Alex launched his career in test prep, tutoring ambitious students from China’s best schools, seeking admission to the most competitive US prep schools, colleges and universities.
Alex especially enjoys identifying the unique needs of each individual student, and coming up with methods that address those needs with laser-like focus. He always strives to explain things as clearly, fully, and memorably as possible, but perhaps even more importantly, he puts the student in the driver’s seat, so that the student is always actively practicing, rather than passively listening. Alex delivers exceptional score improvements (many near perfect scores) as well as students with acceptance letters from Harvard, Stanford, and other prestigious schools.
When not tutoring, Alex enjoys reading books in English, from literature to astrophysics, as well books in Chinese, on such subjects as the rise and fall of the Ming Dynasty. Recently he’s been rock climbing pretty aggressively, and hopes to catch up ASAP with his equally aggressive rock climbing partner, who had a one year head start.
