Avi grew up in Boston, and though he ventured out to the Midwest for college, the smells of New England apple cider donuts and the salty sea spray of Cape Cod will always be synonymous with home.
Avi graduated with honors from Washington University in St. Louis with majors in biology and anthropology, and a minor in writing. His coursework ranged from cultural anthropology to physical chemistry, from argumentation and exposition to genetic engineering. He became a member of Phi Beta Kappa and Lambda Alpha National Anthropology Honors Society. Upon graduation, he received the Department of Anthropology’s award for outstanding achievement and contributions to the field. Avi is now an M.D. candidate at Harvard Medical School and research fellow in the Division of Thoracic Surgery at Mass. General Hospital, intending to pursue a career in cardiothoracic surgery.
Avi gained significant teaching experience in college, where he was invited to work for the Cornerstone Center for Advanced Learning as a tutor, both for pre-medical courses and for MCAT test prep. He also worked as a writing expert, helping students write essays and graduate school applications. Since then, Avi has worked as a teaching assistant in numerous college-level biology courses, and has tutored students of all learning abilities on a range of science courses, from math and physics to chemistry and biology. He has over 7 years of experience as a test prep tutor, in both private and small group settings, helping students prepare for the SAT, SAT Subject Tests, PSAT, Advanced Placement exams, ACT, GRE, and MCAT (including its new format). His students have ranged in age from late elementary school all the way through college and beyond. His love of teaching followed him to medical school where he is now a lab instructor in anatomy for first-year medical students.
An active person, Avi loves hiking, skiing, swimming, and surfing. If he’s not working, you might find him exploring Boston on his Vespa named Shelby, scouring the city for the perfect cup of coffee.
