Derek was born and grew up just outside of New Orleans. After years of visiting the LSU as a football fan, Derek enrolled in the university to pursue dual degrees in mathematics and physics. During the summer before his junior year, he interned at Fermilab working on a particle physics detector. Derek graduated summa cum laude with a BS in physics and mathematics. He also completed a senior thesis on measuring proton-pion production in liquid argon detectors. He is currently enrolled at the University of Michigan and working toward his PhD in physics.
At LSU, Derek worked as a learning assistant for four semesters leading recitations for the introductory mechanics courses. Additionally, he also volunteered for a semester helping middle school students prepare for math problem-solving competitions. At the University of Michigan, Derek has taught the introductory mechanics lab for pre-med students. Derek specializes in standardized test preparation in the GRE, ACT, and the SAT subject tests, as well as academic tutoring in science and math courses.
In his spare time, Derek plays golf and studies golf course architecture. He also loves to cook and read Dante and One Piece.
