Jay Ben has always had extremely varied interests. At various points in his childhood, he determined that he would become a cartographer, a professional skier, a fantasy novelist, an architect, and an award-winning poet. Ultimately he would become an actor, which allowed him to pretend to be anything he wanted. Theater is foundational to Jay Ben's philosophy as an educator. His training at Dartmouth College and Case Western Reserve University was multidisciplinary, intensively self-reflective, and balanced between intuitive and analytical. He learned that education is deeply personal and rooted in knowledge of self, and he brings that awareness to every student.

Jay Ben helped build an enthusiastically-received summer camp program at MaineStage Shakespeare, a nonprofit outdoor theater which he served as Associate Artistic Director for several years. More recently, he has split his teaching efforts the technical and the creative, a dichotomy for which he is well-suited thanks to his bona fides in both left-brain (SAT 2310, National Merit Scholar, scores of 5 on six AP tests) and right-brain (90 sonnets written, appearances in fifteen titles by Shakespeare, willingness to employ funny voices).

Jay Ben recently moved with his fiancee to New Hampshire, but is still available to meet students remotely. He is excited to get outside. The mountains here are top-notch.

"Jay is everything you could hope for in a tutor and more! Not only is his subject matter experience extensive, he is so clear in his teaching style. What makes him remarkable though is his ability to relate to my son. He is warm, and kind but also supports my son in stretching himself academically and emotionally. I honestly could not recommend him more! Nikolai has improved his school performance all around."
