Mac

Bio

Mac grew up in the rolling hills of Kentucky. From the Bluegrass state, he headed north to Middlebury College, where he graduated magna cum laude with a double major in political science and biochemistry. After graduation, he studied cancer biology for a year at the National Institutes of Health in Washington, D.C. Following that, he completed a Master’s program in political science at Boston College. This year, Mac began an MD/PhD program at Boston University.

Thanks to his wide range of interests, Mac has also had a variety of teaching experiences. Mac started teaching while he was a student at Middlebury, taught volunteer swim lessons and tutored friends in a variety of subjects. Since he began at Cambridge Coaching, Mac has tutored students in the SAT, the GRE, and the MCAT. He particularly enjoys working with students to achieve the highest score they can on the MCAT. Mac has a wide range of experience with different academic subjects, including the sciences, history, and political science and looks forward to using memorable analogies to make difficult topics accessible.

In his spare time, Mac enjoys swimming, cooking, reading, and glassblowing.

"Mac did an excellent job of instilling me with the confidence to do well on test day. He established an open line of communication so I felt I could reach out to him if I ever had questions in between our sessions. His way of explaining mathematical concepts made them approchable and much easier to understand. His positive attitude and demeanor helped to alleviate a good deal of the stress I felt about the test. Mac was an amazing tutor! I would absolutely recommend Cabridge Coaching to other students!"

"Mac was great. I was pretty comfortable with a lot of the content already, and Mac was able to adapt to picking harder questions and getting me to focus on paying attention to detail."

"Mac totally helped me visualize what I needed to do, set goals, and keep me on a schedule of preparing for the MCAT. I am someone who really needs specific short term goals, and he really helped me check off things to do in the short term. He also did a fantastic job of explaining the different ways to think about the questions on the exam. I felt that at the end of our time together that I was no longer worried about the exam, and was instead excited about rising to the challenging questions posed."

"Mac was very flexible and accommodating to my learning needs. He was constantly looking for new ways to help me master the material. He went above and beyond his job. I often became upset and frustrated during sessions and he took the time to talk me through my anxiety and encouraged me to continue to push forward. My math skills were nearly non existent when I started working with Mac and he did a very good job of starting from square one and not making me feel badly about it. He gave me so many tools that I will continue to use throughout my education."

"Mac really connected with my son. He also was able to pinpoint what my son needed to work on for SAT prep and focused the tutoring sessions toward his needs. He didn't just work out of the prep books, but used books from our house to get his point across. I liked Cambridge Coaching for the following reasons: the tutor was able to work with my son at our house, the tutor was willing to be flexible with our schedule, we received weekly feedback from the tutor, the tutor tracked my son's practice test scores, and the tutor did a great job connecting with my son."

"This is our first experience with this kind of service, so we didn't know what to expect. In a short period of time Mac helped our daughter's confidence and her understanding of the test increased greatly, which was evident while taking many practice SAT tests. We're happy with her improvement."

"He was able to work in a compressed time frame. He probed for problems-areas in session and systematically assigned homework reinforcing concepts. Mac is easy-going and friendly. A phone call on the evening of the test "for nerves" was a welcome surprise. Mac is a dedicated tutor and it adds a lot to the learning process."

"We tried tutoring at Chyten and at-home tutoring through Kaplan. Neither one worked very well... And then we found Cambridge Coaching and Mac. Mac is friendly, incredibly smart, excited about teaching and was able to adapt his style to fit Rachel's needs and personality. He suggested new books to read and some great vocab boosters. He observed how she was approaching the exam and suggested alternatives that made sense. For example, he noticed that when she approached the reading comp section, she was reading the questions first prior to doing the reading. Since finishing/timing was an issue for Rachel, he was looking for ways to optimize her time. So he asked her to name the 3 things they always ask - she was able to respond with main idea, author's point of view and something else. So she was able to realize that one of her steps was not necessary - and she felt great because she knew what was expected. He was very positive and encouraging and helped Rachel in the week before the test, with good pre-test planning and reminding her to go to bed early before the exam. Rachel was so well prepared and felt so confident going in to the test after Mac's tutoring sessions, that we knew she was able to do her best. Thank you!"

"With a study plan as aggressive as mine was, Mac aided me in achieving the best possible results in the shortest amount of time. Constructive criticism is great for growth, but I do not have much to constructively criticize in this scenario."
