Sara Deniz Akant is a poet, educator, and scholar, who recently found out that she is related to Dracula, by marriage. She grew up as a dual Turkish-American citizen in New York, and graduated with an International Baccalaureate from Atlantic College, in Wales. She returned to the US to study English at Wesleyan University, where she received an Olin Fellowship as well as departmental honors for her thesis, “Flesh and Blood: Repetition and Obscurity in Gothic Poetry.”
Sara holds an MFA from the Iowa Writers’ Workshop, where she was a Truman Capote Fellow, won prizes from the Academy of American Poets, and was named the Provosts’ Postgraduate Visiting Writer. Her first book, Babette, won the Rescue Press Black Box Award in 2015, and her chapbook, Parades, won the Omnidawn Chapbook Prize in 2014. She is currently completing her PhD in English at the CUNY Graduate Center; her dissertation focuses on contemporary poetics, university studies, and de-colonial thought.
Sara has taught introductory and advanced writing for the past eight years across six campuses — including at the University of Iowa, Baruch, Medgar Evers, John Jay, and Hunter College. Just as years of writing and publishing have made her a meticulous editor — she fights the urge to fix-up subway ads and web content on a daily basis — teaching and learning at variety of institutions has made her a patient listener and a savvy mentor. As a tutor, Sara specializes in academic, personal, and professional writing, and works diligently with students one-on-one. She loves using creative strategies for generating content — artifacts, free-writes, brainstorms, lists, word-maps — and has a knack for college and graduate school applications. Whether you struggle to get the first word on the page, need to restructure a cover-letter, seek practice for a written exam, or want to make your personal statement shine, Sara can offer fast, student-tailored guidance that reaches far beyond the grammatical level.
When she’s not writing, teaching, or being tormented by poorly written ads, Sara focuses her energy on other important tasks: unlocking new shrines in Breath of the Wild, de-coding V5s in the bouldering gym, and learning enough Turkish to negotiate prices at Istanbul's Grand Bazaar.
