Shelby is from Wyoming, and he has spent the past decade living in Massachusetts, Colorado, California, and the UK. He has a Master’s in American Studies from the University of Oxford, and he recently received a Master of Fine Arts in fiction from the University of California, Irvine. He spent a number of years as a freelance journalist, publishing stories in places like Vice News and GOOD Magazine, primarily about climate change and the environment.
For the past four years, Shelby has taught writing across a number of disciplines, both as a graduate student and an instructor, including English, rhetoric, legal writing, research methods, literary journalism, and fiction. He has helped students polish short stories for publication, refine profiles to pitch to magazines, and edit personal statements for applications to medical school, law school, and other graduate programs. He especially loves working with students on honing their process and approach to writing, and watching as their projects develop.
When he’s not reading, teaching, or writing, Shelby sometimes plays Zelda: Breathe of the Wild in exactly twenty minute increments.
