Process

Ready to advocate for yourself to an admissions committee?

We suggest a holistic, long-term approach to the law school admissions process. You'll want to allocate time to your academics, LSAT preparation, and pre-law experiences well before you start typing your statement.

1

Maintain a competitive GPA

Your undergraduate coursework and GPA are critical components of your law school application. Though there is no recommended undergraduate major for aspiring JDs – indeed, some of the most successful applicants have backgrounds that initially might seem far afield from legal studies – your coursework should demonstrate a strong command over reading, writing, and analytic skills.

2

Make an LSAT preparation plan

Everyone knows that the LSAT is the gatekeeper to law school admissions. But don’t despair! The truth is that more than any other standardized test, the LSAT is an exam you can prepare for and ultimately master.

3

Craft and polish your LSAC

The application to law school centers around a personal statement that highlights your personal, professional, and academic strengths. This document requires strategic positioning and thoughtful written execution.

4

Bolster your LSAC with compelling explanatory addenda

Most admissions committees believe that candidates should be able to expand on aspects of their candidacy not represented in the standard materials (for example: a diversity statement, a statement of interest, an explanation of academic/LSAT performance). Addenda are particularly essential for applicants who need to clarify a disciplinary, legal, or other specific issue.

5

Refine your resume

Your resume should complement your essays rather than duplicate them. Make the most of your resume, using it as a crisp representation of your experiences that resonates with the broader strategy of your application.
6

Boost your interview game

Not all law schools have an interview component to their process. If a program requests an interview, careful messaging and rehearsal are crucial to a successful outcome.

Waitlist letters

It’s not over 'til it’s over. If you've been wait-listed, you have the opportunity to submit additional information clarifying your continued interest and offering new information regarding your candidacy. We'll help you make sure your update has impact.

“It was great working with Jimmy! My initial personal statement was too broad and did not focus on why I wanted to go to law school. Jimmy helped me to structure my essay in a way that highlighted my strengths, especially my keen interest in practicing tax law, and my passion to pursue inclusiveness. FAQs

  • Are there any academic prerequisites for law school?

There are no specific pre-legal academic requirements. Students of all majors can apply to law school. Typically, admissions committees look for applicants who have experienced a broad variety of courses, from analytically demanding classes to ones that hone reading and writing skills.
  • Can I apply to law school if I have a background in STEM?

Yes! Lawyers are involved in legal and regulatory questions in the sciences, technology, engineering, and mathematics fields more and more frequently.  A background in these fields can, in fact, play to your advantage helping you stand out in the admissions process.
  • Do I have to take the LSAT?

Most law schools require the LSAT, though some law schools will accept either the LSAT or GRE. Be sure to check the most up-t0-date testing requirements for each school on your list.
  • What are the deadlines for applying to law school?

While exact dates vary slightly from school to school, the application itself opens in September on the LSAC website. Some schools have a priority deadline in February, and most final deadlines are in early March. Because law school admissions are rolling, it is recommended that you submit your applications by around Thanksgiving for the best chance of admission. That said, if it's a question of a few weeks, it's always preferable to have stronger materials to show than an earlier application.
  • How do I submit my application materials?

Most schools use the LSAC to manage submissions.
