Process

In gear for the LSAT?

We'll get you there. Our practical, no-nonsense approach is tailored to individual needs, so that you're consistently addressing your weaknesses and bolstering your strengths.

1

Determine when you need to take the test

The LSAT is administered four times annually. Most law schools require that applicants complete the exam by December for matriculation the subsequent fall. That said, it's wise to start studying early. Achieving your best score on the LSAT takes time and it's nice to have the test out of the way by the time your law school application process is in full swing. Many law schools have rolling admissions and you don't want the LSAT to keep you from getting your application in early. In addition, while the vast majority of our students are satisfied with their scores after taking the test for the first time, it is good to give yourself another opportunity in case you are unhappy with your first score.

2

Assess whether the LSAT is part of your law school application process

Some students opt to take the GRE instead.

From our blog: the LSAT vs the GRE
3

Familiarize yourself with the format of the exam and official resources

The Law School Admission Council (LSAC) provides extensive digital practice materials for study.  These are a great place to start.

4

Establish a baseline score with a previously administered test

We highly recommend taking a full-length official practice exam as your diagnostic. We’ll advise you to take the widely available June 2007 exam and we’ll ask you to log your wrong answers so that we can start to identify your strengths and weaknesses.

5

Create a study plan

The LSAT is highly coachable, patterned, and predictable. Question types recur frequently and the correct methodologies dramatically improve scores. We recommend a minimum of 16 one-on-one tutoring sessions to cover the entirety of the test. Most of our students space these sessions out over the course of two to four months in our Comprehensive Package.

6

Start tutoring, and (later) practice testing

You’ll meet with your tutor regularly (ideally, at least once/week), complete homework in between sessions, and take practice tests. Practice tests are the best way to measure how well you’re applying the methods you’re learning in tutoring sessions, and to gauge the progress of your score.

Testimonials

“Working with Chelsea was a turning point in my LSAT studies. I started out in the low 150s and struggled for two years trying to make any meaningful improvement with some of the most reputable tutors out there. After working with Chelsea, I scored a 177. Chelsea has a unique ability to teach and precisely understand where a student is struggling, explaining areas of difficulty in a way that are crystal clear. Questions and concepts I did not understand for years became my strengths after working with her. It is hard to find the words that can give her the credit she deserves. ”

LSAT StudentOfficial score: 177 - Improved by 20+ points

“Best of the best! Patrick always knew what drills and exercises would allow me to gain confidence and a better understanding of how to take the exam. I never left feeling discouraged. Each session I gained the confidence I needed to become a better tester. Score went from 140 to 156.”

CarliOfficial score: 156. Improved by 16 points.

“Brian was a wonderful tutor during my LSAT journey. In just a month and a half, I was able to raise my score 11 points. I could not have done this without his help. He pushes his students to work through problems rather than just giving them the correct answers. Brian is the perfect tutor for anyone wanting to increase their LSAT score before the big test!”

“Preston was great at understanding my particular learning style and crafting an individualized plan and strategy specifically for me. I greatly appreciated this individualized approach and specialized attention to improving particular weak spots. Even I would occasionally panic because I felt I was missing a lot of questions, Preston would take the time to sit with me and talk through strategies for managing anxiety. I saw my score steadily improve with frequent big jumps. I honestly cannot think of anything I would have changed about my tutoring experience. Score went from 162 to 175.”

MattieOfficial score: 175. Improved by 13 points.

“Every session with Preston helped me understand the problems better, increased my speed and accuracy in solving the problems, and helped me gain confidence in problem solving. Preston was always ready to rock! He took the time to evaluate my needs, identify my strengths and weaknesses, and then came prepared to help me improve. The sessions were both intense and informative. Preston constantly challenged me to use the skillsets he helped me learn and then reinforced those skillsets with expert tutoring on areas I struggled with. The positive reinforcement Preston provided helped me understand the material in ways I hadn’t previously considered while improving my ability to work through problems with greater ease and proficiency than I did prior to using Cambridge Coaching services.”

“Adair was wonderful. She has such an incredible personality and it was a joy to work with her. Due to Covid, I am forced to take the LSAT flex. Oddly enough, I found myself looking forward to our LSAT sessions even though the LSAT itself stinks out loud. She did an amazing job teaching me how to take on Logical Reasoning. Adair was always prepared for me and utilized our time effectively. Again, Adair is amazing. She is a lovely individual and incredible tutor.”

Logan

“Aaron tailored my assignments according to my strengths and weaknesses and focused on those areas as I developed basic skills. He always replied in a timely manner and was available if I ever needed to contact him. We went through a lot of material each session. I had a great experience with both my tutor and Cambridge. Everyone was helpful and friendly. Score went from 151 to 169.”

“Alyssa identified my personal issues with the test and helped me work through them with seemingly great ease. Alyssa was exactly what I needed to get my goal score! I'm so happy that I used Cambridge Coaching. I don't think I would ever have gotten a 170 without the targeted 1-on-1 tutoring I received. Alyssa picked up on my testing tendencies very quickly and was able to pinpoint where my mistakes came from and why. She then gave me strategies for attacking these question types that served me quite well on test day! She was flexible with scheduling and really a great mentor to have in the tutoring process. I texted her immediately after I got my score to thank her!”

“You guys are awesome! Your administrators are super responsive, the plans you offer are comprehensive, and Troy was a great tutor! He helped me identify and alter test taking strategies that I didn't realize were working against me, and helped me see that last few points of improvement that I needed! My December LSAT score was a 156, by the time I started Cambridge tutoring in July, I was scoring 164/165. The last practice test I took before the September LSAT was a 170, and I got a 167 on test day.”

FAQs

  • When should I take the LSAT?

As law school admissions is rolling, the earlier you apply (and thus, the earlier to sit for the LSAT), the better. Although most law school admissions deadlines are in February, it's recommended applicants submit by around Thanksgiving for the best chance at admission. As such, you will ideally have taken the LSAT prior to submitting your applications (in the spring, summer, or early fall of the year you intend to apply, or prior). Because the LSAT is not typically offered in December, the November LSAT is usually considered the "last call" for applicants hoping to apply within the same calendar year.
  • What is the format of the LSAT?

The LSAT consists of six 35-minute sections: Logical Reasoning (2 sections), Reading Comprehension, Logic Games, Analytical Writing, and the Experimental section. While schools receive the essay you write for the Analytical Writing section, this section does not contribute to your final score.
  • How is the LSAT scored?

The LSAT is scored on a scale of 120 to 180. When you receive your score, you also receive a percentile ranking that compares your performance with students who have taken the LSAT in the past three years.
  • When should I register for the LSAT?

Registration deadlines fall 4-5 weeks before each test date. Register online here.
  • Can I retake the LSAT?

You can take the LSAT up to three times in a single testing year, up to five times within five years, and a total of seven times in your lifetime. Note that law schools will see all scores earned in the past five years; still, most will use your highest score to evaluate your candidacy.
  • What costs are associated with the LSAT?

The LSAT registration fee is $200.00. Additionally, in order to send score reports to law schools, a fee of $45 is associated with each submitted score report. Learn more about associated fees here.
  • How long are my LSAT scores valid for?

Your scores are valid for 5 years after your test date.
