Process

Ready to tackle the MCAT?

The good news: what you learned in your premedical courses is actually on the test. Studying for the MCAT is about taking that knowledge, stored way back in the nooks and crannies of your mind, and adapting it to the test. Sound daunting? You’ve come to the right place.

1

Determine when you need to take the test

The MCAT is administered more than twenty times per year. Achieving your best score on the MCAT takes substantial time and it's important to have the test out of the way by the time your medical application process is in full swing.

2

Familiarize yourself with the format of the exam and official resources

The Association of American Medical Colleges (AAMC) publishes the MCAT and hosts the admissions portal for medical school (AMCAS). Start by creating an account with AAMC, so you can familiarize yourself with the available resources. A word of caution, though: you should save free practice materials for when you are ready to study in earnest, as they are scarce.

3

Review the MCAT’s content and consider your science knowledge

We generally do not start our MCAT students with a baseline diagnostic test because it does not make sense to waste practice material or put yourself through a practice test before you have comprehensively studied the MCAT content. So, take a look at the material that’s covered on the MCAT and consider where your holes are. You’ll want to patch those holes before sitting for your first practice test.

4

Create a preparation plan

The MCAT is highly patterned and predictable. A solid foundation in MCAT content combined with lots of practice applying this content to question types is the key to mastering this test. Because the MCAT is behemoth in scope, we recommend 36 one-on-one tutoring sessions to cover the entirety of the test. Most of our students space these sessions out over the course of four to six months in our Comprehensive Package.

5

Start tutoring, and later practice testing

You’ll meet with your tutor regularly (ideally, twice per week), complete homework in between sessions, and take practice tests. Practice tests are the best way to measure how well you’re applying the methods you’re learning in tutoring sessions, and to gauge the progress of your score.

“Weike was great at listening to my concerns and, in turn, effectively implementing practical solutions. She really is the renaissance woman when it comes to test prep; in every facet of the grueling process, she has you 110% covered. Not only was she an excellent and accommodating tutor, she was a steady source of moral support throughout the entire time I worked with her. I would recommend her without any hesitations or reservations. She is the real deal!”

Victoria

“There aren't enough words to describe how grateful I am to have had Elliot as my MCAT tutor. He is not only INSANELY intelligent and capable of explaining specific topics in numerous ways (this is for those of us who can't grasp ideas right away) but he is also so caring and patient and has a GENUINE interest in each and every one of his tutees. I seriously cannot recommend Elliot more highly and would not have been able to tackle to MCAT without him!”

Nataly

“Alice consistently went above and beyond to make the MCAT experience as painless and positive as it could be! She not only ensured all the material was learned and covered completely, but she was also extremely supportive throughout the process. I was very impressed at her competence with the material, as well as her patience and compassion. I really enjoyed working with her and am grateful to have had the opportunity to do so! ”

MCAT Student

“In what can seem like a saturated MCAT Prep market with homogenized class packages, Alice provided a breath of fresh air with personally tailored scholarly support. I had previously taken the MCAT, and Alice provided a flexible study schedule to push my test-taking skills to another level. Similarly, she was always supportive of adjusting our study plan depending on my own time restrictions with graduate research and other work responsibilities. I would highly recommend Alice for those pre-meds who find themselves in a similar situation.”

Ian

“Elliot was probably the best tutor I could ask for! He is incredibly patient and is always rooting for you. He was readily able to answer all of my questions, no matter the subject area, and go beyond the surface level information I needed. What really made the difference for me was how readily Elliot was able to explain concepts and then demonstrate how to apply them in various cases. After every session, I walked away with a very clear idea of what I had learned and how I could apply it moving forward.”

Nillani

“Elliot is an amazing and supportive tutor who helps with far more than just the academic side of tutoring. He does a great job of connecting with his students— myself included— and helping manage the stressors of the MCAT and the intense grind of studying. He is of course quite skilled at teaching and going over all material, and is an adept master all around. He truly helped me reach my MCAT goals even in this stressful and uncertain world.”

“Beth was very understanding of the position I was in and reassured me that all of the stress I was feeling was just a part of the process. She immediately understood what I needed and was instrumental in helping me brush up on high-yield topics so that I could apply them to questions that I would see on test day. I would recommend Cambridge Coaching and Beth to anyone who is preparing for the MCAT. It was an absolute pleasure working with this company and Beth! Score went from 498 to 512.”

Miaofficial score: 512. score improved by 14 points.

“Ellen was amazing to work with! I came in feeling uneasy about the amount of material on the exam, but Ellen broke it down in a way that was manageable and very helpful. She has an ability to make even the most difficult concepts easy to understand and provided me with useful explanations and visual aids that really helped me master the content. She was extremely flexible with my schedule and during our sessions she was patient, attentive, and incredibly supportive. It is so clear that she cares about the success of her students and I am so glad I got the chance to work with her.”

Marisa

“Sanjay is a born teacher. He is caring, compassionate, and will go above and beyond for his students. His ability to inspire confidence is exceptional, and confidence is as important as content on the MCAT. I was an MCAT retaker, and Sanjay's help in this process yielded a 14 point increase in my MCAT score. He is a fountainhead of strategies and knowledge, and carries himself professionally while simultaneously empowering his students on a personal level. I cannot recommend him enough.”

FAQs

  • Should I take the MCAT?

You should take the MCAT if you plan on applying to programs granting the following degrees: MD, DO, MD-PhD, DPM (podiatric degree), or DVM (veterinary degree). There are other health-related programs that also accept the MCAT, so be sure to check each school’s testing requirements.
  • What prerequisites should I complete before taking the MCAT?

The MCAT covers material from standard pre-medical courses including: biology, general chemistry, organic chemistry, physics, and first-semester psychology, sociology, and biochemistry.
  • How is the exam structured?

The MCAT is 7 hours and 30 minutes long. Questions are multiple-choice, and the sections include: Chemical and Physical Foundations of Biological Systems; Critical Analysis and Reasoning Skills; Biological and Biochemical Foundations of Living Systems; and Psychological, Social, and Biological Foundations of Behavior.
  • How is the MCAT scored?

The four sections of the exam are each scored out of 132 points, for a cumulative total of 528. Additionally, the MCAT is scaled and equated.
  • When can I take the MCAT?

The MCAT is offered more than 20 times each year, in January, March, April, May, June, July, August and September. It is important to note that there is a break in test dates between September and January, so it is essential to plan accordingly. Find test dates here.
  • When will I get my scores?

Scores are released 30-35 days after the date you sat for the exam. It's thus important to plan ahead, particularly if you're testing in the same year you are hoping to apply to medical school. For example, should you test in June, your scores will likely not be released until July, which is considered late to submit your primary applications to MD programs. As such, is recommended that you test no later than the April of the year you are submitting applications, with May as an absolute last call, so that you can click submit the first day the AMCAS portal opens (on or around June 1st).
  • Where do I take the MCAT?

The MCAT is computer–based and administered at Thomson Prometric testing sites. Because there are a finite number of seats offered on a particular test date at each individual site, it's important to register as soon as possible to secure your top choice testing date and location, particularly if you live in a highly-populated region, such as a big city. If you have trouble finding a test date at a site near you, try to register for a test in a neighboring town. Test dates do tend to open up as students' plans change, however, so keep checking back!
  • How much does the MCAT cost?

The registration fee changes based on the scheduling zone for each exam date, ranging from $315 to $370.
  • When should I start studying for the MCAT?

As soon as possible, provided you've completed all your required pre-medical coursework. Because the MCAT tests the knowledge accumulated in those classes, it is not recommended that you sit for the MCAT until you've taken your pre-meds. Once those courses are under your belt, it's recommended you take as much time as possible to study for the MCAT given the sheer volume of content covered. How long you need to study will depend on your individual mastery of the pre-med subject matter as well as your comfort level with standardized tests in general.
  • Should I sit for the official MCAT even if my practice scores are well below my target?

Definitely not. Medical schools will most likely look at every single MCAT score on your record, so it is only recommended you sit for the MCAT once you're in your desired score range on practice tests. Scores on the AAMC official practice tests are the best litmus for where you might score on the real thing, so it's recommended you save those four practice exams until you're closer to your registered test date.
  • How many times can I take the MCAT?

You can take the MCAT up to three times in a single year, up to four times in two consecutive years, and up to seven times in your lifetime. Voids and no-shows count as an attempt. All this to say, it's preferable if you sit for the MCAT once and only once. Medical school admissions committees weigh retakes of the MCAT differently, with some averaging the scores and others looking at all the individual scores in tandem. Although one retake of the MCAT with a significant score increase may not hurt your chances for admission, provided the final score is within range for American medical schools, the more retakes of the test, the more unlikely it will be for you to gain admission to an MD program. As such, it's recommended you only sit for the MCAT when you're scoring on practice tests where you want to be scoring on the real deal, even if it means postponing to the next application cycle.
