Ash A.

Bio

Ash is a native of Queens, New York and will take every opportunity to remind you of its charms. He spent his teenage years crisscrossing the city, attending Hunter College High School. At Harvard College, he fell in love with the classics of social and political theory, majoring in Social Studies and graduating with high honors. After an MPhil in Intellectual History and Political Thought at the University of Cambridge, Ash returned to his beloved hometown for a PhD in Political Science at Columbia. He recently graduated from Yale Law School and is currently completing his dissertation on various topics in legal and constitutional theory before beginning a fellowship at Columbia Law School.

Ash has taught for nearly six years in both academic classrooms and test preparation. He has worked with students from elementary school through graduate school and is comfortable meeting different academic needs and learning styles. Ash has taught test prep for the Hunter Test, SHSAT, SAT, ACT, SAT Subject Tests (US History, Global History, Math IIC), AP Exams (US History, European History, Micro- and Macroeconomics, English Literature and Composition, US Government and Politics), LSAT, and GRE. He also has extensive experience tutoring middle school, high school and college students, and has provided college and law school admissions counseling.

Outside of academic work, Ash likes to read poetry, fiction, and history, weight lift, and cook. He’s currently trying to learn to not hate running and is developing personal lists of the best almond croissants and bookstores in New York City.

Testimonials
  • Testimonial Citation:
"Ash is phenomenal. He approaches studying in the same way a professional athlete trains. He is an incredibly disciplined student and great instructor. In a very short period of time he helped me refocus what I should be concentrating on. He did a fantastic job of training me to read and take down case notes. Also how to write a great exam answer."

"Ash was an exceptional tutor, not only in terms of his grasp of the material, but also his ability to connect with our son. I cannot recommend Ash highly enough. He was both encouraging and motivating for a young man who was dispirited at the prospect of taking on the SATs. Ash was prepared, clear, and easily able to hold his students attention. Ash was exceptional at clarifying difficult concepts, motivating and generally connecting with our son. It was an entirely positive experience."

"Ash was great at keeping me on deadlines. He was also great at helping guide me as to how to best navigate the law school process and also on helping me throughout the essay writing process. I worked extremely hard outside of these sessions. My coach and I set ambitious deadlines and we reached them."

"Ash was an exceptional coach. He really tailored his approach to my tutoring and school preparation, customizing it to suit my needs/skill sets. We began sessions right before the pandemic, but by session 2, we were virtual, and Ash quickly pivoted to provide a very interactive and helpful approach to tutoring. Ash prepared guides / materials going into our sessions and drills for me to do for homework. We got a ton of practice in, and Ash was also able to guide me through questions I got wrong and walk through how best to approach them. Especially with a full-time job, I needed a coach that could really help me select the schools, guide my personal statement, and help me select who to ask for letters of recommendation. Ash was exceptional at all of this. Ash is really a top notch coach and tutor. He was so helpful from the time I decided to apply to law school, through LSATs, through school applications and now onto actually going to law school. I couldn't say more positive things about him! I was extremely lucky to be paired with him for this experience. He was a 360 coach - also providing some emotional support when I needed it. Thank you Ash!!
